About Us
About The Movement
VISION
To create a world where knowledge is free, accessible, and shared,
where libraries are open 24 hours,
and books belong to everyone, not institutions.
We envision a society where
reading is a culture, not a privilege,
and libraries are living public spaces, not locked rooms.
Mission
The Open Library Movement is committed to democratizing access to knowledge through a network of free, barrier-free, community-powered libraries across India.
We work to:
- To establish 24×7 Open Libraries in public spaces — streets, villages, cities, campuses, bus stops, railway stations, community areas, and open grounds.
- To ensure free access to books with no fees, no registration, and no membership barriers.
- To promote the “Take One Book – Read – Return – Pass to the Next Reader” system
- To actively oppose book dumping and scrapping, and protect books as carriers of ideas and history.
- To encourage book donation instead of disposal under the message: “Read. Donate. Don’t Scrap Books.”
- To revive the habit of reading in the digital age and reduce screen dependency.
- To build community-owned libraries, maintained by trust, responsibility, and shared values.
- To use reading as a tool against ignorance, hatred, and misinformation.
AIM
To make reading a basic human right, not a luxury.
To democratize knowledge by removing economic, social, and bureaucratic barriers.
To create no-registration, no-restriction libraries accessible to all age groups.
To transform book circulation into a social movement, not a controlled process.
To save books from destruction and keep them in continuous circulation.
To empower youth, workers, farmers, women, and marginalized communities through access to books.
To establish a nationwide Open Library Network.
To promote libraries as spaces of thinking, dialogue, and awareness.
To strengthen democracy by building an informed and reading society.
To leave behind a knowledge legacy for future generations.
